Stable Secretary Success Story: Capall Creek Farm

Home of multiple World and Congress Champion-producing stallion, Iron Enterprise, Capall Creek Farm has been breeding and training World and Congress Champions and Reserves for over a decade. “We specialize in breeding, raising and training western pleasure and hunter under saddle futurity horses as well as some all around horses,” shared Melanie Thurston, breeding manager at Capall Creek Farm.

Strong Family Roots

Capall Creek Farm was named by the owners, Kevin and Amy Smith, who wanted to pay homage to Kevin’s Irish family heritage. Kevin’s father lives in Ireland 6 months out of the year and the family’s roots run deep. When choosing the name, they began with the Irish word for horse, capall, and then combined it with the creek that the family used to live on. Since the farm’s inception in 2010, they have bred, raised and trained over 20 Congress and World Champions.

A Growing Dream

While Capall Creek Farm is currently located in North Carolina, its early years were at an impressive 80+ acre facility in Maine. Thurston shared, “The winters were just too hard, and it is nearly impossible to raise foals in that climate in the early months. So, we moved to North Carolin which has been a blessing for our program.” After four years in North Carolina, they jumped at the opportunity to purchase a large parcel of land on the Intercoastal Waterway just outside of Hampstead to build their dream facility. “We love being able to see the intercoastal water while we are riding in our arena. It truly is a blessing and the best of both worlds,” Thurston said.

Getting Organized with Stable Secretary

When Thurston realized that Capall Creek Farm needed a better way to keep track of the medical and physical needs of their horses while at home and away at competitions, she began researching stable management apps. Capall Creek Farm has been using Stable Secretary to manage their facility since November 2020. She comments, “It has really helped with being able to keep track of all of our horses. We have a wide range of horses from young foals to older show horses and they all have different needs. This app helps me to quickly and efficiently add records to the horses while traveling or just on a busy day with the vet.”

 A Foal-Filled Future

One of the proudest achievements under saddle for the farm was seeing the owner’s daughter win the Quarter Horse Congress on a mare that Capall Creek Farm bred and raised. Capall Creek Farm’s future plans are to continue to raise healthy babies and show them to the best of their ability. Stable Secretary looks forward to helping support the Capall Creek Farm team in the years to come!
